However, as a basic metal, zinc alloy inherently oxidizes easily and exhibits weak corrosion resistance. Without proper protection, prolonged exposure to air or moisture can lead to corrosion, discoloration, and even surface powdering, seriously impacting both appearance and lifespan.

1. Zinc Alloy's Natural Weaknesses: Why is Protection Necessary?

Zinc alloy, primarily composed of zinc and other metals (such as aluminum, copper, and magnesium), offers advantages such as a low melting point, excellent fluidity, and ease of die-casting, making it ideal for creating complex and detailed wine glasses. However, zinc is chemically reactive and susceptible to electrochemical corrosion in humid air or environments containing carbon dioxide or sulfides, forming loose corrosion products such as basic zinc carbonate or zinc sulfide. This can cause the surface to lose its luster, develop spots, and even peel. Furthermore, zinc alloys can also suffer from stress corrosion cracking under long-term stress, which is particularly important in thin-walled or complex wine glasses. 2. Multi-layered Protection: Surface Treatment Technology Provides Layers of Protection

To overcome the natural flaws of zinc alloy, modern zinc alloy wine glass commonly utilizes a multi-layer composite surface treatment process, creating a series of "lines of defense" against aging.

First, pretreatment is fundamental. Before any coating is applied, wine glass castings undergo rigorous cleaning, degreasing, pickling, and activation to thoroughly remove surface oil, oxides, and impurities, ensuring secure adhesion of subsequent coatings. This seemingly simple step is crucial to the success of the protective effect. Secondly, a primer layer enhances adhesion and barrier properties. Common methods include electrophoretic coating or spray primer application. Electrophoretic coating forms a uniform, dense organic film on the surface of the wine glass, strengthening the bond between the substrate and the surface layer while effectively isolating the zinc alloy from the external environment, preventing moisture and corrosive media from directly contacting the metal surface. Next, the core protective layers: electroplating and PVD coating. This is the core element in zinc alloy wine glass's corrosion resistance. Traditional processes often employ multi-layer electroplating, such as the "copper-nickel-chromium" plating system. The copper layer provides excellent leveling and adhesion, the nickel layer offers excellent corrosion resistance and gloss, and the outermost chromium layer is hard, wear-resistant, and anti-oxidant, imparting the glass with its classic metallic luster. In recent years, physical vapor deposition (PVD) technology has become the preferred choice for high-end zinc alloy wine glass due to its environmentally friendly, wear-resistant, and rich color palette. PVD deposits metal ions such as titanium and zirconium onto the surface of the glass under a vacuum, creating an extremely dense, high-hardness nano-scale coating. This coating not only offers far superior corrosion resistance than traditional electroplating but also allows for a variety of fashionable colors, such as rose gold, gunmetal black, and champagne gold, and is resistant to fading. Finally, a protective topcoat or glaze is applied. In some designs, especially those with antique, distressed, or special artistic effects, a layer of clear protective lacquer or glaze is applied over the plating to further enhance scratch resistance and environmental durability, while also improving the overall gloss and texture.

3. Daily Maintenance: Auxiliary Measures to Delay the Signs of Aging

Even with advanced protective treatments, zinc alloy wine glass still requires proper care to extend its lifespan. Avoid prolonged contact with water, alcohol, acidic beverages, or high humidity; use a soft, dry cloth when cleaning, avoiding the use of corrosive cleaners; and store in a dry, well-ventilated area to effectively slow the aging process.

Zinc alloy wine glass isn't inherently "immortal." Its ability to withstand the ravages of time stems from the sophisticated collaboration of modern materials science and surface engineering technologies. From basic pretreatment to multi-layer electroplating or PVD coating, to the final protective coating, every step of the process builds a solid protective barrier for this piece of metal art.
